Abstract
This study examined the association of vigorous intermittent lifestyle physical activity (VILPA)—brief bursts of vigorous activity embedded in everyday life—with all-cause, cardiovascular disease (CVD), and cancer mortality among 25,241 nonexercisers in the UK Biobank. Using wearable devices to capture movement patterns, the research found that VILPA was inversely associated with mortality in a near-linear fashion. Even small amounts of VILPA, totaling approximately 3–4 minutes per day, were associated with substantially lower mortality risk, suggesting that brief bursts of vigorous nonexercise activity can elicit similar health benefits to structured exercise.
